Where it can go

On the ground

Set the frame on level ground in the sun, like any ground kit, with the ballast the maker asks for.

On a wall

On the sunny wall of your own house, if the wall is solid and a professional has assessed it first. Makers of these frames ask for that assessment before any wall, flat-roof or raised install.

Never on a wall on a property boundary, such as one shared with a neighbour. Never on cladding or a timber wall, or on a building having cladding remediation. Not on balconies. In England, most homes can fit solar to a wall without planning permission, within limits: listed buildings and street-facing walls in conservation areas are excluded. In Scotland and Wales, check with your council.

Before you order

Work through these first.

  • About 2m × 1.2m of level ground, or of your own solid house wall, in the sun.
  • For a wall, flat roof or any raised spot: a professional assessment before you fit it.
  • A weatherproof outdoor socket within reach of the kit's own cable. No extension leads, cable reels or adaptors. An electrician can fit one if you need it.
  • Modern RCD protection in your fuse box. Not sure? An electrician can check it.
  • Renting, leasehold or a managed building? Get written permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent first.
  • Tell your home insurer before you set it up.
  • Register the kit free at myplugin.solar before you first use it.
  • One kit per household, used as it comes and never with a home battery.
  • England, Scotland or Wales only. Not Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands.

Questions

Who does the wall assessment?

A qualified professional you choose, such as a builder or surveyor for the wall and an electrician for the socket. We don't offer fitting or assessments.

Can I start on the ground and move it to a wall?

Yes, that's what the adjustable frame is for. Get the wall assessed before you move it.

Is a wall better than the ground?

A sunny, south-facing wall keeps the panel off the lawn and up out of the way. The ground is quicker to set up. Either way the kit sends up to 800W into your home.
